Plans for Wales' first dedicated science park has been given the green light.

Menai Science Park Ltd has secured planning permission for the park, which will be based near Gaerwen on Anglesey.

The company said it hoped to have the park up and running by 2017-18 and would bring together "hi-tech industry and scientific research partnerships".

The project has secured £10.8m investment from the Welsh Government and £10.2m of EU funding.

It comes after the park received outline planning approval in May 2015.

Executive director Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "This project ties in with many ongoing economic strategies and comes at an opportune time to link with other ongoing projects in the region, including Wylfa Newydd and projects in the renewable sector."

It would also work with Bangor University to provide masters degrees and scholarships, he said.

Its vice-chancellor, Prof John Hughes, said: "Bangor University is delighted with the news that the detailed planning application has been approved.

"Many departments within the university are already heavily involved with the project and the collaboration will only strengthen as the park continues its development."
